Jonathan's wife Sally (Chair of Oxford Parkinson's UK) was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2008. Since then she has thrown herself wholeheartedly into fundraising and Parkinson's support work, and Jonathan thought it was about time he made a contribution too.
Jonathan loves the North of England, visiting archaeological sites, and hiking. So what could be better than to walk the Hadrian's Wall national trail, and invite everyone to sponsor him?
"Perhaps not the scariest challenge you may have seen here, but in my mid-sixties a walk of 84 miles over 5 days may be.... interesting. I'll be posting updates as I go along, starting in Bowness-on-Solway on Monday 11th June and (if all goes well) arriving at the Segedunum museum in Wallsend, just east of Newcastle city centre, mid-afternoon on Friday 15th. I really hope they sell blister pads in the museum shop!
I'm not roughing it - there are plenty of B&Bs and pubs within easy reach of the trail - but I'll be carrying everything with me, and the detours to overnight stays and Vindolanda museum will make the total walk close to 100 miles."
