OPDC Principal Investigator
OPDC Theme 2 Leader
Richard leads the Oxford Parkinson's Disease Centre (OPDC), established with the £5m Monument Trust Discovery Award from Parkinson's UK. Richard also leads the OPDC theme to generate improved cellular and genetic models of Parkinson's (Theme 2).
Richard works on molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, heading the Molecular Neurodegeneration Research Laboratory and the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Centre. He plays a leading role in the IMI StemBANCC program using stem cells for drug discovery and heads the iPSC Dementia Stem Cell Initiative in the Dementia Platform UK.
Richard's work consequently has two main interests: studying the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and related disorders, and developing novel viral and nonviral gene expression vectors as potential therapies.
In the OPDC Richard will be generating the new transgenic rat and mouse models of Parkinson's and studying the cell biology of dopamine neurons.
